Gallop through Time with Circle S Stables

The Museum of the Albemarle in conjunction with Circle S Stables will host Gallop through Time with Circle S Stables on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 15 and 16, 2014 from 9 a.m. until Noon for children 5 to 12 years old.  Pre-registration and camp fee are required, which includes a light snack. 

Participants will travel back in time to follow the evolution of prehistoric horses to the modern horse.  Discover how the horse aided over everyday lives, before planes, trains, and automobiles, and learn the proper care of this amazing animal.

Fundraising Dance featuring “Full Deck”

A Fundraising Dance sponsored by…Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle,

On Saturday, June 28 (7 pm – 10 pm) the Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle, Gateway Bank, TowneBank of Currituck, Pepsi, and Budweiser look forward to presenting an evening filled with fun, great music, and dancing featuring the ever-popular local band “Full Deck.”  The fundraising dance will take place at the Museum of the Albemarle on the J. Wilson Jones, Jr. Festival Portico and Stage and will begin at 7:00 pm.  Dress comfortable/casual and come on out!

   “Full Deck” performs a variety of musical styles including classic rock, blues, soft rock, Motown, a bit of country, as well as some original music; and features the original four band members of “Goose” that was formed back in the 1970s (Jerry Drew, Lindy Watts, David Lunsford, and Bruce Lamb).   After several years, when life got in the way and priorities changed, the bandmates went their separate ways, remaining in touch but placing their joined musical talents temporarily aside. 

    It was in 1995 that the four original band members reunited under the new moniker, “Full Deck.”   During that period and over the next fourteen years, several other local talented musicians, including Jerry White, became a part of the band.  Although others came and went, the original four remained pretty much intact while gaining the exceptionally-talented Chris Betts.  The band performed together over the next three years as “Full Deck” and entertained at practically every venue in the area including local nightclubs, the Potato Festival, Riverspree, private parties, wedding receptions, fundraisers, and in several Virginia venues.  After a three-year hiatus, those five bandmates came back together in 2013 with the addition of the much-needed keyboard talent of Sylvia Berry, bringing “Full Deck” to their complete six-member team. 

   You don’t want to miss this fun evening and other than brief intermissions, the band will continue to play through 10 pm.  Along with the great music and dancing, the ticketed event includes light snacks and a CASH BAR that includes Pepsi products, Budweiser products, and assorted wines.  So, bring a few extra dollars along with you to assure your thirst is quenched throughout the evening.  Cash Bar will accept cash only.    

   Don’t wait until the last minute to get your tickets as this is sure to be another sell-out.  There will be a few tables available as well as chairs, but to assure you have a seat, feel free to bring your own fold-up chair.  No seating will be reserved but will be on a first come basis.

Bermuda is probably best known today for its pink sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters.  It's also only about 650 miles due east of where we live today.  No wonder, then, that there are many historic connections between this island and the eastern seaboard of North America.  This PowerPoint talk by Martha Williams, museum volunteer and archeologist, will examine the long relationship between this tropical paradise and our region of the Mid-Atlantic states.

 Hands-on Historians and Sprouting Scientists:

A Summer Camp with Museum of the Albemarle and Port Discover

Looking for something fun and educational for the little ones in your life?  The Museum of the Albemarle and Port Discover will hold Hands-on Historians and Sprouting Scientists Summer Camp beginning Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until Noon.  

Campers 5 to 8 years old will begin their adventure at the Museum (Monday – Wednesday, June 23 - 25).  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel from the sea to the mountains on a bike and the sites you might see? The Museum will take you on an imaginary journey across North Carolina. Along the way, you’ll experience flat lands, rolling foothills, and the steep climb to the Blue Ridge Parkway, while experiencing local culture.  Campers then travel to Port Discover for the remainder of their adventure (Thursday- Friday, June 26 - 27).   Campers will explore bicycle safety, electricity generating bicycles, bike art and more. Our "sprouting scientists" will discover the health benefits and environmental benefits of biking. Campers will receive a bike helmet and have a chance to bike around downtown Elizabeth City.



Campers 9 to 14 years old begin their adventure at Port Discover (Monday – Wednesday, June 23-25).  Campers will explore bicycle safety, electricity generating bicycles, bike art and more. Our "sprouting scientists" will discover the health benefits and environmental benefits of biking. “Archaeology 101 for Children”

Become an archaeologist for the day!  Visit with real archaeologists and view the tools of the trade on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Albemarle. Various stations will be set up to explain that artifacts have a meaning or a story to tell, the tools and methods used by archaeologists, how artifacts are recovered in a systematic fashion and how organized records are kept of finds, and the aspect of processing and interpreting artifacts from a site.  Discover what some local archaeologists have uncovered in their own backyard. Visitors will participate in archaeological activities.

 The Museum of the Albemarle will host History for Lunch on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 12:15 p.m.  The first Wednesday of the month you can bring your lunch and enjoy a lecture by a different speaker. The museum provides the beverage.  You may come earlier to eat your lunch before the lecture begins.

June’s program is a spicy adventure in cooking and will include demonstrations by local chef Jack Baumbaugh. Baumbaugh is a graduate of the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and has worked at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and Montero’s.  He has also taught in the culinary programs at Santa Barbara City College and the College of the Albemarle.  During the museum’s Cinco de Mayo: A Fiesta and Informational Fair, he delighted audiences with several demonstrations of salsa making.

Cinco de Mayo Comes to the Museum of the Albemarle May 3

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Spicy adventures in cooking, colorfully-clad dancers and piñatas for the kids will highlight the buzz of activity at the Museum of the Albemarle May 3 Cinco de Mayo:  A Fiesta and Information Fair. Currently exhibiting Al Norte al Norte:  Latino Life in North Carolina, the day of celebration is one of the related free programs for the free photography exhibit, running through July 5.

Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Jose Galvez moved to North Carolina from Arizona in 2004 and began documenting life in the Latino community, of business owners, farm laborers and grandparents alike. The 2010 U.S. Census reports that 8.4 per cent of the state’s population is Latino, compared to 1.2 percent 20 years earlier.  In 51 photographs, Galvez reflects the Latino community adapting to and shaping life across North Carolina.

Galvez will conduct tours of the exhibit in English and Spanish the fiesta and fair. Al Norte al Norte is the museum’s first bilingual exhibit. Featured artist Cornelio Campos also will exhibit and sell paintings that reflect the complex realities of migrant life that often are concealed, including immigration, the U.S. Mexico border difficulties, and cultural identity.

Ballet Folklorico—Espirito from Pitt County will perform three dances throughout the day in traditional costumes.  Local chef Jack Baumbaugh, graduate of San Francisco’s California Culinary Academy, will tantalize the taste buds with various salsas for tasting. Local vendors will have food for purchase also.

Jewelry, scarves, purses, and children’s items will be sold by local vendors as well. Hands-on children’s activities will include making Cascarones, piñatas, and maracas. A storytelling session will feed the imagination and “Shine Boy Stories and Photographs” by Jose Galvez is available in the museum gift shop. Handcrafted items from the Albemarle region, including jewelry, pottery and ornaments also are available.

The Association of Mexicans in North Carolina, Inc. (AMEXCAN) Community Resources Center will sponsor an informational fair with information on health care, safety, education, and activities in the area. Eastern North Carolina Stop Human Trafficking Now will participate and also sell handmade items to support their efforts.

The museum is seeking additional food and craft vendors for the fiesta. Application information is available by email at moa@ncdcr.gov or by calling (252) 335-1453. Informational fair vendors may submit a copy of their non-profit status and the application fee will be waived.
