July 2008 - Bocce Ball Tournament

Let's Party!

On Saturday, July 19, 2008, a Bocce Ball tournament will be held at Waterfront Park, Elizabeth City to raise funds for Special Olympics. Mayor Steve Atkinson is Master of Ceremonies along with special guests. A key to the City will be presented.

We are committed to do this for the next five years, making it bigger and better every year.

Bocce Ball is a simple, informal fun game, where a small white ball (golf ball size) is tossed on a grass court 8 x 60 feet. Two teams roll 4 balls a piece (soft ball size) to the small white ball closet in order to score points. Bocce ball is a very popular game on the east coast as it has been throughout the world. Lots of fun and anybody can do it. Entry fee is $100.00 for each 4-member team.

We are looking to have 100 4-member teams to compete in an elimination tournament. Your team is guaranteed three games. Hopefully, if your team has any luck, many more.

Teams will be matched against friends and competitors. Like ... Doctors against Nurses, Banks against Banks, Insurance agencies against Insurance agencies, Law office against Law office, Realtors against Realtors, Golfers against Golfers, etc.

We'll have vendors who will provide food for the entire family. Nutritional drinks, fancy drinks for children and drinks for adults.

Available also are opportunities for corporate sponsorship at Gold, Silver and Bronze levels for sponsorship of multiple teams, to a VIP tent hosted by Montero's of Elizabeth City, and the Weeping Radish of Currituck. Join in and socialize with your friends and competitors and congratulate the losers with bragging rights. (The game is all luck.)

All donations are tax deductible. Donations for directly to the Sheriff's Department to be presented to the Special Olympics.

Whether you are a single team or a corporate sponsor, please consider to come and shake hands with our Sheriff's and their staff. Let them know how much we appreciate their dedication and hard work trying to protect us. More information is forthcoming.

Museum of the Albemarle’s New “Our Story” Exhibit Offers One-Stop History Lesson
-- More than 750 artifacts tell the story of northeastern North Carolina’s Albemarle region --

(Elizabeth City, N.C., May 21, 2008) – Travelers to northeastern North Carolina now have a starting point for exploring the region’s abundance of historic sites and waterfront settings. The Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City has just opened “Our Story,” a thoughtful and handsome exhibit that weaves together the history of 13 counties surrounding the Albemarle Sound.

A permanent feature of the museum’s second floor, the 6,200 square-foot exhibit uses illustrated murals, muted lighting, photography and more than 750 artifacts to depict the Albemarle region’s maritime, canal, railroad, automobile and tourism eras.

“‘Our Story’ is the history of the region. It is a story of how northeastern North Carolina communities adapted to the challenges and opportunities of its unusual home,” said Don Pendergraft, the museum’s exhibit design chief.

Throughout the gallery, dark blue carpeting represents the water, and cork flooring the land – symbolic of residents’ ever-changing relationship with the rivers, sound and sea. As visitors make their way through the eras, eye-catching displays reveal such gems as a pine dugout canoe; the cannon recovered from the ship purported to be Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge; the smokestack from the C.S.S. Albemarle; a miniature replica of the James Adams Floating Theatre, the inspiration for author Edna Ferber’s popular novel, “Show Boat”; a horse-drawn “steam pumper” fire engine; and a 1954 Moth Boat, a small sail boat that was developed in Elizabeth City.

Visitors can walk into the Jackson House, a 1755 farmhouse that spanned both the Colonial and Federal time periods. The farmhouse and nearby ca. 1840 smokehouse are original structures from the area. The exhibit also features a 1950 restaurant counter and stools from the Comstock Confectionary, once a popular local soda shop.

Displays of period clothing and ample use of photographs further depict life in the respective time periods. Attached to many of the displays are photograph “flipbooks,” allowing visitors an opportunity to learn more about the large images they see.

“Our Story” was made possible through the Museum of the Albemarle’s capital campaign that raised more than $1.5 million in private funds.

The Museum of the Albemarle (www.museumofthealbemarle.com) is located at 501 South Water Street in Elizabeth City, N.C. The northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History, the museum interprets the history of 13 counties in northeastern North Carolina, considered by many to be the birthplace of English America. Admission is free. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. For information, call (252) 335-1453.

Elizabeth City – June 14, 2008 – Elizabeth City State University’s Lyceum Series presents Wilson Williams and The Platters for one show only starting at 7:00 pm in the Fine Arts Center on ECSU Campus located at 1704 Weeksville Rd Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Wilson Williams and The Platters will be performing such classics as Only You, The Great Pretender, Remember When and Twilight Time and more in the upcoming Lyceum Series concert. The group that is now lead by Lonza Bartlett, an ECSU alumnus, had toured with Monroe Powell who was the third lead singer to headline the original Platters group since they formed back in the early 1950s. About a year ago, several members of Wilson Williams' Platters scouted Bartlett when he was singing at a Gospel music festival in downtown Fort Myers, Fla. Since then they have performed together in Atlantic City, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas, to name a few.

The show is sponsored by The Prism Group, Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Arts of the Albemarle, Mitchell Insurance and The Piano Nook. West Ehringhaus St, The Piano Nook at 202 McMorrine St. and the Fine Arts Center Box Office on the day of the show.

Elizabeth City Area CVB’s Director, Russ Haddad comments, "We welcome The Platters to the Harbor of Hospitality. Performers of the stature of The Platters don't come to the area very often, and with a homegrown talent in Lonza Bartlett being part of the group makes it that much more exciting. We encourage everyone to attend a sort of homecoming and support Lonza and The Platters."
