Pre-Schoolers at MOA!

“Pre-Schooler Time”
(Elizabeth Cit, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle will hold “Pre-Schooler Time” on Thursday, October 15, 2009 from 10:00 am until 10:45 am. Participants must be between the ages of 3 to 5 years old and must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-Schoolers will compare past and present fire trucks, clothing and equipment while participating in a hands-on activity. The Elizabeth City Fire Department will be present to take part in the activities in recognition of Fire Safety Month. This event is free.

“History Tales: Make It, Take It”
(Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle will hold “History Tales: Make It, Take It” on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 3:30 pm until 4:30 pm. Elementary age participants will learn about major fires within the Albemarle region. View firefighting artifacts from the Museum’s collection and participate in a hands-on activity. This is a free event.

Preschoolers "Mix-It-Up" at Port Discover’s Toddler Time, October 15
Elizabeth City, NC — Children will discover different states of matter—liquids, solids, solutions and mixtures—during Port Discover’s Toddler Time, Mix-It-Up, Thursday, October 15 at 10:00 am. The young scientists will learn why measurements are important in science and will put these skills into practice as they make their own bath salts to take home.

Toddler Time is a science program just for preschoolers, ages 3 – 5. Cost for the program is $5 per family and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child.

Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or www.portdiscover.org.

Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

Virginia State Captures First Win over ECSU Since 2005; Earn All Important Division Win

October 3, 2009

PETERSBURG, VA - The Virginia State University snapped Elizabeth City State’s four game win streak with a 23-10 triumph at Rogers Stadium Saturday night.

Most significantly the Trojans now hold the head-to-head advantage over the Vikings. Both hold 2-1 conference marks in the East behind Bowie State who remains 3-0 in the CIAA after their 51-20 win over Lincoln University Saturday.

The Trojans scored 20 points in the first half while concurrently holding the Vikings scoreless before the intermission. That marks the first time that a team has blanked ECSU in the first half since it happened in a 14-6 loss to Virginia Union on October 29, 2005. Additionally the 2005 season was the last time that a Virginia State team defeated the Vikings.

After the Trojans first possession yielded a punt, a fumble by Creven Powell on ECSU’s first play from scrimmage gave VSU the ball back on the Vikings’ 25 yard line. Six plays later Antwain Lyde caught a 17-yard pass from Leonard Johnson and the Trojans took an early 6-0 lead after a fail extra point attempt. With 5:38 remaining the first quarter Johnson found Corey Young with a 35- yard scoring strike and a 13-0 advantage. Then, with just 35 seconds left before the intermission, Rahoo Walker capped a 12 play 78-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown rush and a commanding 20-0 score.

After the initial turnover at the start of game, each Viking offensive series in the first half ended with a punt and they only crossed into Trojan territory once (43-yardline). In the second half the Vikings converted two interceptions (Tolbert Matthews, Zavis Padgett) to a 25-yard field goal by Daniel Mendez and a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Howard Williamson in the third quarter. The Trojans would chew up precious time in the 4th quarter (11:54) and add a 39-yard field goal by Justin Parker to close out the game.

ECSU’s offense tallied a season low 135 yards from scrimmage while the defense surrendered 356 (121 rushing) total yards to the Trojans. Virginia State (4-2, CIAA 2-1) was 7-for-14 on third down conversions and was 2-for-2 in the red zone. They also held a 19-9 advantage in first downs.

Museum of the Albemarle opens Out of the Blue: Coast Guard Aviation, a tribute to US Maritime Guardians
(Elizabeth City, NC, Oct. 5, 2009) – A sea of US Coast Guard dignitaries, active and retired guardsmen and distinguished guests gathered in Elizabeth City, NC, this past weekend when the Museum of the Albemarle opened Out of the Blue: Coast Guard Aviation, an exhibit honoring the nation’s maritime guardians. A special museum feature for the next five years, the exhibit navigates two centuries of U.S. Coast Guard history from its 1790 beginnings to its aviation presence in northeastern North Carolina today.

Lady Vikings Breeze Past Lady Tigers; Sweep Back-to-Back Matches

October 1, 2009

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings made quick and easy work of their double header with Saint Paul’s College by sweeping both volleyball matches 3-0 Thursday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Lady Vikings won the first match in 45 minutes 25-3, 25-6, 25-10. As a team they hit 44 percent from the floor. Jasmin Knox, who at one point served 14 straight points in game one, had 4 of the Lady Vikings 13 service aces. Jennifer Hendy topped ECSU with a team high 8 kills.

In match two, the Lady Tigers were the home team on scoreboard but the result was the same. This time ECSU took 47 minutes to dispose of Saint Paul’s 25-6, 25-9, 25-11. Like the first match the Lady Vikings used their serve to keep the Lady Tigers off balance, racking up 17 for the game. Lia Scott and Stacie West tied with a team high 7 kills apiece.

Saint Paul’s falls to 1-14 on the season and remain win-less (0-8) in conference play.
