Vikings’ Bench Play Dominant in as ECSU Begins 09-10 Campaign

November 19, 2009

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State Vikings kicked off the 2009-2010 season with a 75-51 win over Voorhees College Thursday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Vikings shot a solid 48% from the field and forced 26 Tiger turnovers which were converted into 26 points. ECSU held its largest lead of the game, 55-24, with 11:12 left in the second half after leading 37-20 at the intermission.

Trent Bivens and Marquie Cook paced ECSU with 21 and 16 points, respectively. The Vikings bench dominated the Voorhees reserves 41-18. Although they were never seriously threatened by their opponent ECSU struggled from the charity stripe going 12-29 (41%).

Antwan Carter led the way for Voorhees (0-7) with a team high 12 points.

ECSU (1-0) will hit the road where they will open up conference play with Livingstone College on Saturday, November 21st. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

Vikings, Golden Tigers Will Meet For the First Time December 5th in Columbia, SC

Columbia, SC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) have announced that Elizabeth City State University and Tuskegee University have been selected to participate in the 11th Pioneer Bowl. The game will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia, SC, 2:00 pm.

The Elizabeth City State University Vikings, led by Head Coach Waverly Tillar, finished the season with a 7-3 overall record and found themselves in the midst of a three-way tie-breaker for a chance at the Eastern Divisional title. The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers, led by Head Coach Willie Slater, won their fourth consecutive SIAC Championship, while holding an 8-2 overall record with one regular season game remaining. TU is currently ranked #14 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll and #3 in the latest Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) poll. This will mark Tuskegee’s eighth Pioneer Bowl appearance while Elizabeth City State will be making their first.

The Pioneer Bowl is the only NCAA sanctioned bowl game involving HBCU athletic conferences. The game features teams from the SIAC and the CIAA.

ROTC Viking Battalion improves performance at Fourth Brigade Ranger Challenge
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- Cadets from the ECSU ROTC Viking Battalion finished 10th out of 19 at the Fourth Brigade Ranger Challenge held at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The Fourth Brigade of ROTC is comprised of 39 colleges and universities. The 39 colleges are divided into two divisions based upon the size of the university and the number of cadets in the ROTC program. The ranger challenge is an overall military skill competition.

The ROTC Viking Battalion included 10 students as team members and three support cadets. The events at the ranger challenge included a physical fitness test, land navigation tests comprised of a written exam, day and night field exercises, a 10 km run with each cadet carrying 35 lbs of equipment, a rifle marksmanship competition, a hand grenade assault course and a one-rope bridge test.

Most of the students on the ROTC Battalion have competed in previous ranger challenges. Lt. Col. Barnes said the team performed better this year than last year. The ranger challenge showcases the skills of officers trained in ROTC.

"The cadets learn to compete with cadets from other universities in a grueling series of events held over two days. There are individual and group exercises that test their ability to persevere. The Viking Battalion earned third place in the marksmanship category." Lt. Col. Barnes. "Next year the team is looking to place in the top three in our respective division. Their performance at the ranger challenge prepares them for the mental and physical challenges they will encounter in U.S. Army."

Melvin Perry said he returned to the Ranger Challenge for the third time this year. The Viking Battalion included students from the freshman class to the senior class. They began preparing for the Ranger Challenge in August before the semester began.

"There is nothing easy about the Ranger Challenge. The average Joe off the street wouldn’t be able to do the things we do there nor would most athletes," Perry said. "In some cases you are running while carrying your equipment uphill. You have to use your map, compass and land navigation skills during the written, timed, land navigation test. We also complete day and night land navigation tests on foot so this is a physical and a mental challenge. Safety is a priority."

Game to Feature Players from the Four HBCU Conferences

ATLANTA, GA - Four members of the Elizabeth City State University football team have been selected to play in the Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl Saturday, December 19th in Montgomery, Alabama.

ECSU’s honorees include All-CIAA performers Reggie Smith, Dylan Stivers, Justin Hamilton and Daniel Mendez. Earlier this month Smith was tabbed as for the All-CIAA First team as a punt returner and landed on the All-CIAA second team as a kickoff return man. Stivers made the First Team as an offensive lineman while Hamilton concluded his career at ECSU as a three-time (07,08,09) All-CIAA First Team selection at cornerback. Mendez, who handled the bulk of the punting and kicking duties for ECSU in 2009, was an All-CIAA Second Team selection.

The Vikings finished the year at 7-3 overall and in a three-way tie for the top of the CIAA Eastern Division.

The game will be played with an East vs. West format. The East team will comprise of the MEAC and CIAA conference players with the West team comprising of the SWAC and SIAC players. All players participating will be draft eligible seniors who have exhausted their college football eligibility. The Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl Selection Committee will evaluate game film, review statistics, coaches recommendations, and inquire information from professional scouts as they put together the best talent in HBCU football.

The Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl will kickoff at 2:00 pm at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, AL.

Museum Of the Albemarle’s Holiday Open House "Mr. Christmas to View at Museum of the Albemarle"
(Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle will host a holiday open house "I’ll be Home for Christmas" on Saturday, December 5, 2009 from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. This year’s celebration will highlight the impact of the Great Depression and the beginning of World War II on family holiday celebrations. As part of the event there will be a matinee viewing of the holiday movie "Mr. Christmas" at 3:00 pm during the holiday open house. "Mr. Christmas" is a period film set in 1941 just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It is a heart-warming family story of a young father who because of economic conditions can’t afford to buy his five year old daughter, Carol Lee, what she’s expecting Santa Claus to bring her for Christmas. Because she has written a letter to the North Pole, Carol Lee is certain that Santa will bring her the bicycle that is "number one" on her list. The story has a surprise uplifting ending that is guaranteed to put anyone of any age in the Christmas spirit. The movie has an Elizabeth City connection in that the Museum of the Albemarle’s Education Coordinator, Charlotte Patterson was Costume Designer for the film. She will be available after the showing of the film for discussion of her experiences during the making of the movie. The film produced and directed by Beth Brickell has won several awards including "Best Family Film" Moondance Film Festival, Hollywood and "Award of Excellence" Film Advisory Board, Los Angeles. PBS broadcasts the film as a part of its annual holiday offerings. The New York Times calls it "A heart-warming holiday tale for the whole family". In addition to the film there will be activities for the children and holiday refreshments. Santa will be available from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm to hear all of your Christmas wishes and offer photo opportunities. The College of the Albemarle’s Community Band will be playing holiday selections in the Lobby from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Museum of the Albemarle invites you to join us for an afternoon of celebrating the holiday season before you attend the Jaycee’s Annual Christmas Parade. Gail Halvorsen had Elizabeth City children jumping for joy when he sailed chocolates aloft on tiny parachutes from the "Spirit of Freedom," a restored 1945 Douglas C-54 aircraft. The beloved "Candy Bomber," who piloted the famous 1948-49 Berlin Airlift, will return to Elizabeth City, NC with more treats when the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Regional Airport presents its First in Flight Festival, Dec. 5 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with support from the Albemarle Economic Development Commission.

Lady Vikings Secure Top Spot After Posting 14-1 Record

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State University bowling team took first place overall at the CIAA Eastern Division Meet I held this past weekend at Albemarle Lanes.

All-CIAA performer Tiffany Johnson took the top individual score (for 8 games) with a 192.6 average (1541 pins). Shanice Watkins placed third overall (1634 pins/9 games) while Ryan Backus finished fourth (1473 pins/9 games). Overall all eight of ECSU’s bowlers placed in the top twenty for individual performances.

As for team standings the Lady Vikings (14-1) finished first overall followed by Bowie State (10-5), Virginia State (8-7), Saint Paul’s (8-7) and Virginia Union (1-14). Lincoln University of Pennsylvania also participated but did not place as they have yet to join the CIAA a full member. However the Lady Lions were the lone team to defeat ECSU; in the final match of the weekend LU took the teams’ baker matchup 622-573.

LADY VIKINGS TAKE SEASON OPENER WITH 72-67 VICTORY OVER MOUNT OLIVE
Gill Registers Double-Double in Lady Vikings’ Season Debut

MOUNT OLIVE, NC - The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings went on a 10-1 run late in the second half in route to a 72-67 victory over Mount Olive College Sunday afternoon.

Kenyatta Gill led ECSU, posting team highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Joyce Freeman added 15 points while Kearah Jefferys and Shaquella Johnson contributed 12 and 11 points respectively off the bench.

The Lady Vikings gave up 21 second chance points (MOC had 20 offensive rebounds) however they overcame that by shooting a solid 51.6% from the floor in the second half. After back to back jumpers by Freeman sparked the Lady Vikings’ run a jumper by Jefferys with 1:35 to go gave ECSU the lead for good (65-64).

Helen Moore led all scorers with 21 points in 25 minutes for the Lady Trojans (0-1).

Downtown Illumination and Christmas Land & Boat Parades
Traditionally, the EC Jaycees Christmas Parade is the first Saturday in December. This tradition will continue with new partnerships as four local organizations have come together for the benefit of the community to ring in the Holidays on the Harbor on Saturday, December 5th beginning at 5:30 pm. The Elizabeth City Jaycees, Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. Pasquotank River Yacht Club and the River City Fraternal Order of Police have all partnered in sponsoring the biggest holiday celebration ever called "Harbor Holiday Celebration".

1. Land Parade
   The theme is "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and will start at Westover Street, besides Bojangle’s, with the line up going downtown Catalina and run along Corsair Circle. All floats must enter from Hull Dr., between the Moose Lodge and Performance Chevrolet.


1. First place trophies will be awarded for the following categories: Church, Civic Group, School Club, Band, and Business.

2. Downtown Illumination
   Will take place as the Mayor of Elizabeth City and the Pasquotank County Commissioner (Parade Dignitaries) approach the intersection of South Road Street and East Main Street. The countdown will be begin the season with the bright and festive lights on East Main Street.


3. Boat Parade
   The theme will be the same as the Land Parade, "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and will take place immediately following the Land Parade. Applications are available at Pelican Marina or send an email requested to elizabethcitydowntown@embarqmail.com. There are 2 classes of boats: Large 30 feet and up, and Small 29 feet and down. Boats must be in the water and tied up at Mariners’ Wharf Park by 5:00 pm. There will be a Skippers meeting at 5:30 pm. at the Hospitality Tent. Boats will light up and pass the waterfront after Santa passes from the Land Parade.


1. Trophies will be awarded. If there are 3 or more civic, church, groups entered they will be awarded separately.


4. Festive holiday music will be played on Mariners’ Wharf Park and free hot beverages will be served by the Fraternal Order of Police.
