BOWIE STATE BLOCKS ECSU IN 72-64 DIVISIONAL WIN

Bulldogs’ Travis Hyman Sets School Record with 13 Blocks Versus Vikings

January 28, 2010

BOWIE, MD - Bowie State University’s Travis Hyman recorded a double-double of 14 points and school record 13 blocks in the Bulldogs’ 72-64 win over Elizabeth City State University Thursday night at A.C. Jordan Arena.

Hyman fell just two rebounds short of a triple double with 8 boards on the evening. Duke Crews also added a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Bulldogs improve to 10-5 overall and 8-3 in the CIAA.

Despite the block party the Vikings, who trailed 36-30 at the half, knotted the score at 44 apiece on a Blake Price layup with 13:57 remaining. The Bulldogs then went on an 8-0 run for some much needed cushion only to have the Viking pull within three (52-49) with 9:33 to go. ECSU stubbornly refused to go away and with two free throws by Marquie Cooke at the 4:16 mark the Vikings had clawed to within a point (60-59).

However the Vikings scored only five points the rest of the way while the Crews scored six points in the waning minutes. As a team the Bulldogs cemented the win going 6-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Three Vikings tallied double figures led by Cooke’s team high 16 points. Paul Goldsmith and Spady finished with 14 and 12 points respectively.

The Vikings (10-9, CIAA 7-6) will host Virginia Union University on Saturday at 7:30pm in the RL Vaughan Center. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
