ECSU Wins Second Consecutive Game in Overtime

RALEIGH, NC- Kenyatta Gill scored a game and career high 22 points as Elizabeth City State University knocked off the #23 ranked Shaw University Lady Bears 66-64 in overtime Saturday evening in Spaulding Gymnasium.
The win is the second for the Lady Vikings over a ranked team this season as they topped Johnson C. Smith on January 9th when they were ranked in the top 25. It also represents ECSU’s first win over Shaw University since the 2006-07 season.
In the extra period Tanisha McGaughey drained a 3-pointer with 9 seconds remaining to put the Lady Bears up 64-63. On the Lady Vikings’ ensuing possession Gill was fouled and sent to the line where she sank two free throws giving ECSU the lead for good. Shaquella Johnson stole the Shaw inbounds pass and was then fouled where she sank one of two free throws for the final point spread.
Joyce Freeman collected her second double-double of the season and in as many games with 12 points and 12 boards while Kearah Jefferys chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
