SHAW RALLIES LATE TO EDGE ECSU VIKINGS 61-58

ECSU 0-16 from Downtown in Three Point Loss to Shaw Bears

RALEIGH, NC - Brandon Simms nailed a three-pointer with 1:47 remaining to lift the Shaw University Bears past Elizabeth City State University 61-58 Saturday night at Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Vikings led the entire second half and with 4:43 left held an 8-point advantage 53-45. From that point on the Bears would close the game out on a 16-5 run to complete the come from behind victory. In the final two minutes the Bears (8-6, CIAA 6-2) secured two key offensive rebounds which assisted in their rally; The first came off a Michael Smith put-back after a miss by Adrian Bascom which made the score 57-55 in favor of ECSU. Smith was fouled in the process and went to the free throw line to complete the possible three-point play. He misfired on the free throw however Bascom corralled the offensive board which set the stage for Simms go-ahead three-pointer.

Eric Pitts was the lone Bear in double figures with 10 points. Marquie Cooke led all scorers with 16 points while Paul Goldsmith notched another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
