Sharpless Scores Winning Basket, Season High in Road Win

February 11, 2010

RICHMOND, VA- Freshman Angelo Sharpless scored a career and game high 24 points as the Elizabeth City State Vikings handed Virginia Union University a 65-64 win Thursday evening at Barco-Stevens Hall.

Sharpless’ offensive board and put-back of a B.J. Williams free throw miss with 9 seconds remaining gave ECSU a 65-64 lead. The Panthers, who suffer their first Eastern Division setback of the year, were unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer sounded. Prior to the Vikings’ final basket, Williams was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and had sunk the first two free throws before the Panthers burned a timeout.

The win completed a Viking comeback that saw them behind 38-29 at the half; ECSU went on to outscore the Panthers (17-5, CIAA 13-5) 36-26 in the second half behind 11-23 shooting (47.8%) from the floor . It also gives ECSU its first win over Virginia Union at Barco-Stevens Hall in Coach Shawn Walker’s tenure.

Along with high game high 24 point performance, Sharpless finished with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocked shots. He was 10-13 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. B.J. Williams and Paul Goldsmith added 11 points apiece.

The game was tied 9 times and had 15 lead changes while the Panthers dominated the boards 38-29.

Braxton Byerson led VUU with 23 points off the bench.

ECSU (12-12, CIAA 7-11) will take on Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit
