Virginia State Rallies to Force Overtime; Earn First Division Win
February 6, 2010
ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Virginia State’s Brandon Plummer scored a game high 26 points as the Trojans captured a 88-83 overtime win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
The Vikings failed to register a field goal in the final 3:18 of regulation and hit just one field goal, a three-pointer, in the extra session.
After a tip-in by Paul Goldsmith gave the Vikings a 76-69 lead with 3:18 left in regulation, Plummer single handedly forced the overtime session by scoring seven straight points. First he sank two free throws then with 1:52 left in the half, connected on his third 3-pointer of the evening to bring VSU to within a basket. That basket came via a layup after a Viking turnover and he capped off his personal rally with 53 seconds remaining to tie the game at 76 apiece.
Another ECSU turnover gave the Trojans a shot to win the game in regulation but Brandon Macklin’s jumper missed its mark and C.J. Wright corralled the rebound and the game went to the extra session.
In overtime the Trojans scored on their first two possessions and with 2:21 left took an 82-77 lead on a layup by Jacobe Simpson. The Vikings hit their only field goal of the overtime, a Trent Bivens 3-pointer, with 1:31 to go, trimming the Trojan lead to 83-82. Simpson responded with a jumper and the Trojans went 3-4 from the free throw line to cement the win.
Neither team led by more than 7 points in the contest and the lead changed hands 11 times.
Macklin finished with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds as VSU improves to 4-16 overall (CIAA 3-12) and 1-3 in the Division.
Goldsmith paced ECSU with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Bivens and Angelo Sharpless chipped in with 18 and 17 point efforts.
