
Turnovers Plague Lady Vikings in Divisional Loss to Lady Trojans

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Virginia State University Lady Trojans held on a for a 71-64 Eastern Division win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
Leslie Phillips led the way for Virginia State with a team high 16 points as the Lady Trojans improve to 15-4 overall (CIAA 11-3) and 3-0 in the CIAA East.
The game’s most telling statistic was VSU’s dominance on the boards. The Lady Trojans outrebounded ECSU 40-25 leading to a 17-4 second chance point advantage. Lady Trojan senior center Angela Brown added 13 points helping VSU to a 42-20 edge in the paint.
VSU held a 64-53 advantage with 5:26 remaining, when ECSU reeled off six unanswered to pull within five with 3:59 to go. The Lady Trojans responded with seven straight of their own to seal the game.
Shaquella Johnson led all scorers with 17 points while Joyce Freeman added 14 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.
