VUU PANTHERS TOP ECSU VIKINGS 56-43

Second Half Rally Fall Short as ECSU Tallies Season Low 43 Points

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Virginia Union Panthers remained undefeated in the CIAA Eastern Division with a 56-43 win over Elizabeth City State University Monday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

With the win the Panthers (15-6, CIAA 12-4) move to 4-0 against Eastern Division opponents. Braxton Byerson led the way for the Panthers with a game high 17 points off the bench.

A B.J. Williams three-pointer broke an 8-8 tie, giving ECSU a brief 11-8 lead at the 14:40 mark of the first half. From there the Panthers reeled off a run, outscoring the Vikings 21-4 over the next ten minutes for a 17-point advantage (29-12). Virginia Union held a 33-17 lead at the intermission. In the first half the Panthers totaled 15 points off Viking turnovers and behind 9 points from Byerson, Virginia Union’s reserves outscored ECSU’s bench 15-2.

After the break Vikings got some inspired play with 10 points each from Trent Bivens and Virgil Johnson but ultimately could not overcome the halftime deficit. ECSU chipped away at the lead and only trailed 49-43 with 5:53 on a layup by Bivens. However ECSU was held scoreless the rest of the way missing their last eight attempts at the basket.

ECSU shot a season low 26% from the floor on 13-49 shooting. Trent Bivens was the only Viking in double figures with 14 points.

ECSU (10-10, CIAA 5-9) will return to action when they travel to take on Saint Paul’s College on Thursday, February 4, 2010. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Brunswick Senior High School in Lawrenceville, VA. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
