LADY PANTHERS RALLY FOR 57-52 WIN OVER ECSU

Second Half Turnovers Costly as Lady Vikings Fall to 0-2 in the CIAA East

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Virginia Union Lady Panthers rallied from a double digit second half deficit to capture a 57-52 win over Elizabeth City State University Monday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Lady Vikings tied their season high with 28 turnovers (Bowie State, 1/28). In the second half alone ECSU coughed up the ball 21 times hindering their ability to maintain the 13 point lead they had built with 16:08 to go in the game. Virginia Union collected 22 second half points off ECSU’s miscues and between the 15:23 and 9:11 marks on the game clock the Lady Vikings turned the ball over 14 times and was held to one field goal. Concurrently Virginia Union (5-13, CIAA 2-13) broke loose with a 12-2 run and with 8:28 to go had their first lead, 42-41, of the second half.

The two teams traded the lead four times in the closing minutes but ECSU did not score from the floor in the final three minutes with the exception of a Courtney Scott layup with 27 seconds to go.

Tonaye Smith, the CIAA’s leading scorer, finished with a team high 14 points while Shaquella Johnson paced the Lady Vikings with a game high 16 points.
