Telephonics Opens New Technical Support Services Center in Elizabeth City, NC

(Elizabeth City, NC, June 15, 2010) – Today, Northeastern North Carolina economic development leaders gathered in Elizabeth City, NC for the opening of the Telephonics Technical Support Services Center. It is the second aviation-related business to relocate to the area since city and county officials broke ground on the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Aviation Research and Development Commerce Park in late 2008.

Headquartered in Farmingdale, New York, Telephonics provides integrated information, communication and sensor system solutions to military and commercial markets throughout the world, including the U.S. Coast Guard’s Air Logistics Center in Elizabeth City. The company’s new support services center is located next to the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Regional Airport, which shares a runway with Air Station Elizabeth City.

“The proximity to the U.S. Coast Guard base will enable us to expand our role with that customer, not only as provider of the advanced systems and technologies they need to better perform their missions, but also to ensure that their systems are available to be used at all times,” said Joseph Battaglia, president and chief executive officer of Telephonics.

“It’s fitting that a company whose specializations include radar is one of the first to home in on the business opportunity presented by our aviation park,” added Wayne Harris, director of the AEDC.

The Coast Guard’s Aviation Logistics Center is the nation’s only depot-level maintenance facility for the entire U.S. Coast Guard aircraft fleet.

The Telephonics Technical Support Services Center is comprised of 15,000 square feet of hangar space, including a state-of-the-art demonstration room to simulate the system operator’s environment and 7,000 square feet of office and avionics repair space. Initially the center will employ up to eight, including senior radar technicians, hardware and software systems engineers, Elizabeth City State University School of Aviation Science interns and packing and shipping and administrative support.

“Telephonics’ presence adds to Elizabeth City's growing reputation as a hub of aviation and aerospace development,” said Elizabeth City Mayor Roger McLean. “And the company's partnership with Elizabeth City State University highlights the critical role of ECSU in enhancing that reputation.”

“The Pasquotank County Commission is proud to have been a partner in creating this tremendous opportunity for high-wage employment for our citizens,” said Commission Chairman Marshall Stevenson.

Located across the street from the Telephonics facility, the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Aviation Research Development Commerce Park is being developed. Last summer, the infrastructure for Phase I of the park was completed, including a 2,400-foot taxiway connecting the 7,200-foot runway shared by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Regional Airport. Upon completion, the aviation park will include a site for four 60,000 to 80,000 square-foot hangars, already leased by DRS Technologies, and the Elizabeth City State University School of Aviation and Science and a College of the Albemarle FAA-certified Air Frame and Power Plant Maintenance training facility.

“This beautiful, state-of-the-art hangar whose opening we are celebrating today is yet another realization of the economic potential of our partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard,” said Joe Forbes, chairman of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Airport Authority.

Headquartered in Elizabeth City, the Albemarle Economic Development Commission markets business opportunities in the City of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County to prospective employers throughout the United States.
