GOLDEN BULLS EDGE ECSU VIKINGS 77-75

JCSU Squeaks Out Win in Closing Seconds, Wins Fifth Straight

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - In a game that went down to the wire, Johnson C. Smith University held on in the closing seconds for a thrilling 77-75 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

With 50 seconds remaining and the score 76-72 in favor of the Golden Bulls, ECSU’s swarming defense forced back-to-back turnovers. The first, resulted in an unconventional three-point when Paul Goldsmith scored a basket and connected on the free throw to pull ECSU to within a point. JCSU’s ensuing possession yielded another turnover and with 15 seconds left the Vikings called a timeout.

With 6 ticks remaining Marquie Cooke’s jumper missed its mark and unable to secure the rebound ECSU was forced to foul Trevin Parks who converted one of two from the charity stripe for the game’s final score.

The two teams were virtually even during the contest, each grabbing 35 rebounds while attempting nearly identical numbers from the field; 29-57 for JCSU to 25 of 58 for the Vikings.

Both squads combined for 17 three pointers in the game; ECSU with 7 made on 18 attempts while JCSU (7-4, CIAA 4-0) netted 10-19 from downtown.

The teams’ respective high scorers, the Golden Bulls’ Ronald Thornhill and the Vikings’ Deon Rice scored 23 apiece.
