VIKINGS HOLD ON FOR 62-60 WIN OVER BLUE BEARS

ECSU Picks Up First CIAA Win in Nail biter Over Livingstone

January 6, 2011

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - For the second time in as many games the Elizabeth City State University Vikings came away with a two-point victory, this time at the expense of Livingstone College 62-60.

ECSU’s woes from the free throw line haunted them Thursday night as they converted 12-27 for the game, missing 14 (11-25) in the second half alone.

The Blue Bears fared only slightly better going 20-34 from the charity stripe.

In a game where both team struggled with free throw shooting, it was only fitting that the game’s closing minute be decided at charity stripe. After a jumper by the Blue Bears’ Darius Cox gave his team a 60-59 lead with 33 seconds left, the Vikings’ Quintin Spady was fouled on ECSU’s ensuing possession. With 20 ticks remaining, he converted both shots giving ECSU a one point advantage.

Rondy Tucker was then whistled for his fifth foul which sent LC’s Nasir Austin to the line for two shots. After he misfired on the first, ECSU burned their final timeout, icing Austin whose second missed shot was corralled by Trent Bivens. Bivens, the Vikings’ high man with 14 points, sank one of two shots for the game’s final point spread.

Donte Durant had a team high 14 for Livingstone as the Blues Bears slip to 4-3 (CIAA 0-1) on the season.

ECSU (7-2, CIAA 1-0) will host Johnson C. Smith University at 7:30 pm at the RL Vaughan Center on Saturday. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
