  • Children must be age 5 - 12-years-old to participate. Space is very limited and reservations are encouraged. Cost is $10 for first child and $5 for each additional child (per family). Port Discover Membership is Required (Yet you can purchase a membership at the door)

    • Port Discover offers Kids Night-In during the First Friday Art Walk. Parents let your children come to Port Discover to create some kid-friendly art and watch a movie, while you enjoy an evening on the town.

  • Grown-ups learn about the science of beer-making!

• Science Café - Topic: The DRS in?
  • It's a science program just for the local adult community in an informal, casual restaurant setting, participants will be able to add to the conversation and ask questions. This program is FREE to attend.

    • Thursday, May 16, 10:00 am : Six Legged Friends
    • It’s a buggy world out there. Learn about the characteristics of insects and even examine some up close. Participants will make their own ant models from recycled products.
• Afterschool Science:
  • Drop into Port Discover for some afterschool science—featuring a different theme each month. The program is Free and made possible thanks to the City of Elizabeth City.
    • Thursday, May 23, 4:00 pm : Egg to Chicken
    • We will take a close up look at chicken eggs as they begin to develop into little baby chicks. Mason Lawrence from the 4-H will be teaching an exciting class on embryology.

It's almost that time! We are so excited to open the 6th season of The Downtown Waterfront Market on Saturday, May 4th! We have quite a few new vendors lined up, so we're sure to have a great season! If you haven't sent in an application yet and would like to be a vendor on May 4th, please email or call me ASAP. We are filling up fast for the first date. I am working on the map and list of vendors and would like to include everyone when promoting. We also have the updated Non-Profit Application on the website. If you know of any church, civic organization, etc, that would like to participate, have them fill one out and call me.

*VENDORS: If you have NOT heard from me via an email, Facebook message or phone call then you are all set to be a vendor at the market this season. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

May 2013: Millpond Day at Merchants Millpond State Park

Merchants Millpond State Park will be having Millpond Day on May 11th. This is a free event for all ages. There will be live music, a free 5k, tours, food, vendors and lots of activities for kids and adults.



The 2nd annual Millpond Day 5K will be held at 10am on May 11th. The entire event is free due to generous donations and the Friends of Merchants Millpond.

Ridley Student Complex). In the event of rain, Green the Block will be held in the Robert L. Vaughn Center.

Green the Block is an environmentally friendly field day where the university and its partners educate students and the public on how to live healthier and more sustainable lifestyles. We encourage local vendors and farmers to host a table- free of charge- where they are able to sell their product, market their business, offer jobs, or distribute educational materials. This is a family friendly event where participants will find food, fun activities and games!

May 2011: Elizabeth City Hub Farmers' Market News

Elizabeth City Hub Farmers' Market News: The Food and Nutrition Services of USDA will hold a FREE workshop for food retailers to fill out applications for FREE EBT card reader machines that let them accept SNAP program benefits (formerly known as food stamps). This will go on from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Friday, May 20, 2011 in the Extension Center Auditorium in Pitt County, Greenville, NC. Contact Tom Campbell at 252-338-3954 for carpooling information. Any food retailer can apply for a FREE EBT card reader so they can accept SNAP electronic cards.

The area's first strawberries and asparagus have arrived in the new Elizabeth City Hub Farmers' Market at 405 Halstead Blvd. across from the Golden Corral Restaurant and beside Walgreen's. This market will become the hub of group support for entrepreneurs growing food, producing crafts, performing varied skilled services, manufacturing, making repairs and learning together about successful business practices in a supportive environment. It will be a place, too, for vendors and customers alike to learn about healthier means of living, conserving energy, making solar and wind energy, collecting and recycling rainwater, gardening 12 months a year, and learn ways to keep our bodies energetic and strong, no matter what our age.

This business incubator can serve to mentor our youth who dream of creating businesses with their talents, skills, and ideas. It serves as a place to nurture aspirations of persons of all ages who want to experiment with business grow where they can be appreciated and assisted towards success.

While the market hours are not yet set in stone and will expand into weekdays. As more weekday hours are set, the local products you come to enjoy will be available to you with more regularity, and some producers who opt to leave product with the Hub Market sales staff can pursue other activities with their time.

Friday and Saturday afternoons from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm are definitely hours the vendors will keep right now, especially on Saturdays, after the Downtown Saturday Waterfront Market opens next weekend on Saturday, May 7.

May 2011: “200 years of the Millpond”

200 YEARS OF THE MILLPOND
Merchants Millpond State Park will be celebrating “200 years of the Millpond” on Saturday May 7th from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.

The event is open and free to the public!

It will include live music, Canoe and hiking trips, kid’s art contest, a jump house, health screenings, the unveiling of 2 new cultural exhibits, and many more activities for the whole family. The celebration will also include many local vendors and food.

PASQUOTANK COUNTY MASTER GARDENER VOLUNTEERS ANNUAL SPRING PLANT SALE
Spring is bustin' out all over...and it’s the perfect time to have a PLANT SALE. You are also invited to enjoy a stroll through the demonstration raised gardens.

Our plant sale will feature trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, and herbs; all at very reasonable prices.

DATE: SATURDAY, April 30th, from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon (Rain or Shine) (No early sales)

Talk with our Master Gardeners, learn gardening tips and what plants work in our area. Many of the plants featured are propagated and grown in our members' own gardens. There will also be a variety of plants available from Northeastern High School FFA program.

Proceeds from this sale benefit our MGV horticulture educational scholarship program and NHS-FFA.

Port Discover’s Afterschool Science presents “Green Thumb Challenge,” Thursday, April 21st
Elizabeth City, NC — Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of fresh air and planting to celebrate Earth Day. Port Discover partners with Shaklee in the Albemarle, and Project Grow, in partnership with Food Bank of the Albemarle, to present a “Green Thumb Challenge” at Port Discover’s Afterschool Science program on Thursday, April 21, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Children will prepare plants for Port Discover’s new “Kids Grow” community garden, made possible thanks to a grant from AgCarolina Financial. Students will also create recycling art to learn the importance of the 3 R’s - reduce, reuse and recycle!

Kids will learn how water plays an important role in Eastern North Carolina and what they can do to keep our water clean.

Growing Your Own Bouquets:
Learn how having a small designated flower bed (3’ x 10’) as a cutting garden is the first step to a season full of gorgeous cut flowers! Following Lisa’s recommendations for easy soil preparations, variety selections, organic methods, and harvesting practices will have your garden producing a bounty of flowers to fill your home and enough to share with friends.

Lisa tells it all when it comes to gardening and cut flowers. Her contagious spirit inspires beginners as well as the seasoned gardener. Lisa’s sustainable and organic gardening experiences have been gathered from everyday life on her cut‐flower farm nestled in the heart of the City of Newport News, Virginia. Lisa’s energy permeates a room; her experience ignites the love of gardening; and her simple.

The Shopping Event:
Immediately following the program you will enjoy shopping from items highlighted during the program. A percentage of each purchases will help cover the cost of the building for the program and to support the Master Gardeners’ Scholarship Fund. All of the products sold by TGW are those used by Lisa in her own commercial cut-flower growing operation. You may use cash, checks and any major credit cards to make purchases. You will have opportunity to shop and ask questions after the program, which lasts 45 minutes to an hour.

Get Down and Dirty at Port Discover’s Afterschool Science, Thursday, November 18
Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover’s Afterschool Science invites kids to get Down & Dirty, Thursday, November 18, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Get ready to get all the dirt…on dirt! Children will learn where dirt comes from, what makes dirt, and how it affects our everyday life. Dig in a soil pit, play in mud, learn to compost, and plant a plant to take home for a winter garden. Join us for a messy day of fun!

Afterschool Science is Port Discover’s new free, interactive science program featuring a different and timely topic each month. This afterschool science program made possible thanks to support from the City of Elizabeth City. No reservations are necessary.

Port Discover is located at 611 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Port Discover Offers Treetop Topics at Second Saturday Science on Saturday, November 13
Elizabeth City, NC — From roots to leaves, children will learn all about trees during Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science, Treetop Topics, Saturday, November 13 at 11:00 am. Rob Davis, a ranger with the North Carolina Forest Services will discuss the environmental importance of trees and the process of reforestation.
