Elizabeth City-Pasquotank TDA Focuses On Attracting Overnight Visitors

(Elizabeth City, NC, Sept. 2, 2009) – This year, as the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) focuses on attracting overnight visitors from outside the area, it will no longer be able to underwrite the Elizabeth City fireworks celebration at the level it has in the past, said TDA Chairman Arthur McPherson.

"Our tourism budget has been significantly reduced this year because of the economy," said McPherson. "The fireworks celebration is a wonderful community event. But as the tourism industry rebounds, we must be poised to move forward with a very strategic approach. Attracting overnight visitors is the TDA's primary mission, so our focus will be on promotions to do just that." [read more]

Jewelweed, A Poison Ivy Treatment from Nature

Press Release Contact: Thomas Campbell
Are you aware of this product line containing Jewel Weed Extract. At her wild plants lecture at Currituck County Extension Center earlier this year, Vickie Shufer of Pungo, VA gave a convincing testimonial about the efficacy of jewel weed extract for prevention or relief of Poison Ivy itch. After a field trip through poison ivy infested trails with 30 youngsters, Mrs. Shufer dipped the arms and hands of her hikers in a bucket of jewel weed infusion. Only one hiker refused the treatment. Guess who was the only hiker to come down with poison ivy itch within two days.

Since I notice that Jewel Weed is an Impatiens species, I wonder if the same anti-poison ivy properties might be found from extracts from commonly cultivated Impatiens plants which are sold as flowering bedding plants for shady areas. Have any of you any thoughts or experience on this idea?

Incidentally, Watson Lawrence of the Chesapeake office of Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension will host a marvelous program on planting, managing and marketing pick your own blueberry operations. This will begin 8:30 AM on Sept 10 and conclude by early afternoon. The program costs $10 per person and lunch is served mid-day. Call 757-382-6348 for all details about this program. I welcome you to call me about car pooling to this event.

It will be held in the Chesapeake Main Library near the Chesapeake City Hall, then go out to an actual blueberry pick your own farm.

I hope to attend and bring some folks from here. I've helped two such farms start in recent years in my county.

Maybe we'll see you there !

Mariners’ Wharf Will Come Alive with Music This Fall

September 19 through October 24, 2009 will mark the first annual MUSIC ON THE GREEN AT MARINERS’ WHARF, a fall festival featuring an eclectic and colorful mix of the area’s best local and regional musicians. Highlighting Top 40, country, classic rock, jazz, Christian rock, bluegrass, and blues, MUSIC ON THE GREEN will run for six weeks on consecutive Saturdays from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

A natural spin-off of the well-received Mariners’ Wharf Film Festival, and brainchild of Debbie Malenfant, owner of City Wine Sellar, and Maureen Donnelly, owner of the Elizabeth City Bed & Breakfast, MUSIC ON THE GREEN is free to the public, with donations accepted for the bands.

"While the event is a music festival, patrons will be encouraged to visit downtown businesses both before and after the concerts," Malenfant says. "The time of the festival was selected specifically to generate shopping in our lovely boutiques and dining in one of our many restaurants, bars, and taverns in downtown Elizabeth City, giving residents and tourists the opportunity to make ‘a day of it’ in a variety of ways." Donnelly notes that MUSIC ON THE GREEN is a wonderful way to showcase all the great musical talent in the area. "We know that people enjoy live music and the opportunity to visit and utilize our beautiful waterfront," she says. "Elizabeth City is a great weekend getaway for travelers who want to experience a charming historic community with a variety of activities."

Located on the lawn at Mariners’ Wharf, which was the site of the film festival and is the home of Saturday morning’s popular Downtown Waterfront Market, MUSIC ON THE GREEN will feature the following bands for 2009:

September 19 : Chuck Hodges and His Makeshift Band
September 26 : Connected
October 3 : Ticky Tacky
October 10 : Uphill
October 17 : Moments of Glory
October 24 : Bobby Plough

For more details and for information about the bands, please visit www.MusicAtMarinersWharf.com or contact Debbie Malenfant at (252) 267-6920 or d_malenfant@yahoo.com.
