ECSU Defense Holds Golden Bulls to a Season Low in Scoring

CHARLOTTE, NC- The Elizabeth City State Vikings earned a 54-38 victory over Johnson C. Smith University Monday night at Brayboy Gymnasium.

The Vikings used pressure defense to contest most of JCSU’s looks at the rim, holding the Golden Bulls to just 19 points in each half; 29% from the game. ECSU also forced 25 JCSU miscues resulting in 26 points off turnovers.

The Golden Bulls only lead came after Dante’ Drummer scored the game’s first basket at the 18:28 mark. The Vikings went on to stretch the game, connecting on five 3-pointers in the first half, two apiece by Trent Bivens and Blake Price. Price, who led ECSU with 10 points in the first half, finished with 14 points and 4 steals. Bivens finished with his second double-double of the season of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Jerry Hollis was the Golden Bulls’ (2-2, CIAA 0-1) top scorer and rebounder with 10 point and 11 rebounds.

The Vikings (2-1, CIAA 1-1) will return to action at the 2009 Fresh Coast Classic in Milwaukee, WI November 27-28. They will face Lincoln University (MO) at 3:00 pm on Friday, November 27th. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

JCSU Rides 40-4 Free Throw Advantage in Nine Point Win

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls converted 21-40 free throw attempts to remain perfect on the season in a 51-42 win over Elizabeth City State University.

On the other side Lady Vikings went 1-4 from the free throw line as the home team was only whistled for 8 fouls during the game. Despite the difference in the foul calling the second half was tightly contested yet JCSU, (17-30 free throws in the second half) was able to close out the game even though they only hit 4 field goals from the floor.

The Lady Golden Bulls (4-0, CIAA 1-0) dominated the glass 47-30 behind 10 rebounds apiece from Sheria Hatcher (12 points) and Brittane Neely (11 points). Shaquella Johnson was the only Lady Viking in double figures with a career high 19 points off the bench.

ECSU (2-1, CIAA 1-1) will return to action at the Virginia State University Thanksgiving Classic November 27-28 in Petersburg, VA. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- Elizabeth City State University announces Mr. William G. Smith as the new Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement at Elizabeth City State University. Mr. Smith will also supervise the following departments: Alumni Relations, The Community Development Program, University Relations & Marketing, Radio/TV Services. Mr. Smith holds a bachelor of arts degree in public administration from North Carolina Central University and he completed the Mid-Management Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Banking.

Mr. Smith has over 30 years experience in the financial services industry: Chief Business Development Officer at Imperial Community Bank (2008); President and Chief Executive Officer at Mutual Community Savings Bank Inc. SSB (2001-2008); Senior Vice President and Community Development Lending Sales Leader for the Mid-Atlantic Region at Wachovia (1999-2001) (formerly First Union National Bank of North Carolina.) Vikings Drop First CIAA Contest of the Season on the Road

SALISBURY, NC - Livingstone College defeated Elizabeth City State University in overtime 72-69 Saturday evening at New Trent Gymnasium.

Freshman guard Quintin Spady hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session tied at 62 apiece. In overtime the Blue Bears outscored ECSU 11-8 going 4-6 from the field and 3-6 from the free throw line. The Blue Bears earn their first victory of the season by outrebounding the Vikings (+11) 41-30. The final board of the night sealed the LC victory when King Cannon’s rebound and put-back of a missed 3-pointer by Donte Durant accounted for the game’s final point spread.

The game saw 13 lead changes and 8 ties while both team struggled to convert from the free throw line. ECSU shot 52% (13-25) while the Blue Bears went 12-30 for 40%.

Spady led four Vikings in double figures with 16 points off the bench while Marquie Cooke added 12 points. Trent Bivens registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and Blake Price chipped in with 10 points.

Jarred Stockton paced LC (1-2) with game highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds.

ECSU Rallies from Double Digit Second Half Deficit; Remain Undefeated on the Road

SALISBURY, NC- Briana Glover’s layup with 15 seconds remaining proved to be the go ahead score as the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings rallied past Livingstone College 62-58 Saturday night at New Trent Gymnasium.

ECSU trailed by a much as 15 in the second half but a 3-pointer by Courtney Scott with 4:17 remaining gave the Lady Vikings a 56-54 lead, their first since prior to the intermission. The Lady Blue Bears hit only two field goals in the game’s final six minutes. The Lady Vikings out-rebounded Livingstone 47-30 and scored 16 second chance points.

The Lady Viking bench outscored the Lady Blue Bear reserves 44-8 behind career highs from both Tiffany Gadsden (18) and Shaquella Johnson (15). Kenyatta Gill poured in 13 points and Glover grabbed a career high 10 rebounds.

Kayler McBride led all scorers with 19 points for the Lady Blue Bears who fall to 2-1 on the young season.

Vikings’ Bench Play Dominant in as ECSU Begins 09-10 Campaign

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State Vikings kicked off the 2009-2010 season with a 75-51 win over Voorhees College Thursday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Vikings shot a solid 48% from the field and forced 26 Tiger turnovers which were converted into 26 points. ECSU held its largest lead of the game, 55-24, with 11:12 left in the second half after leading 37-20 at the intermission.

Trent Bivens and Marquie Cook paced ECSU with 21 and 16 points, respectively. The Vikings bench dominated the Voorhees reserves 41-18. Although they were never seriously threatened by their opponent ECSU struggled from the charity stripe going 12-29 (41%).

Antwan Carter led the way for Voorhees (0-7) with a team high 12 points.

ECSU (1-0) will hit the road where they will open up conference play with Livingstone College on Saturday, November 21st. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

The week of December 5th–12th looks to be an exciting week in Downtown Elizabeth City as the Downtown Business and Professional Association celebrates Holidays on the Harbor, a week of holiday festivities, shopping events, and fun activities for the entire family!

Participating stores and restaurants will be having holiday sales and other events. Many stores will have extended hours during the Holiday Parade and Grand Illumination (scheduled for December 5th, beginning at 5:30 pm), as well as during the themed shopping evenings on December 9th through 12th.
