Freeman’s Go Ahead Three Gives ECSU Emotional Win over Lady Broncos

January 25, 2010

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Joyce Freeman’s go ahead three-pointer with 57 seconds gave Elizabeth City State University the lead for good in an emotional 71-68 win Monday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

With the Lady Vikings trailing 64-62 the game was stalled with 1:16 remaining when junior forward Kenyatta Gill fell to the court where she lay for nearly 20 minutes. After she was taken from the court by EMT personnel, the two teams formed a circle at midcourt in a gesture of unity on Gill’s behalf. Play then resumed where FSU’s Tiffany Haywood missed two free throws setting the stage for Freeman’s three-pointer.

The Lady Broncos came up empty on their final two possessions (two turnovers and two missed shots) with the exception of a Haywood layup as the final buzzer sounded. ECSU freshman Crystal Smith had a layup, a steal and two free throws in the game’s final 23 seconds. Smith finished the evening with a game and season high 16 points on 7-13 shooting from the field.

The Lady Broncos committed 24 turnovers in the game (18 in the first half) which led to 24 points for the Lady Vikings. ECSU held a 37-33 lead at the half.

Freeman finished with 15 points while Shaquella Johnson chipped in with 14 off the bench. Deja Middleton led FSU (10-6, CIAA 7-4) with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Vikings (12-5, CIAA 7-5) will hit the road to take on Bowie State University in their first Eastern Division game of the year. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm on Thursday, January 28 in Bowie, MD. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
