Last Second Blocked Shot Secures Divisional Win for ECSU

RICHMOND, VA- Elizabeth City State University held on to defeat the Virginia Union Lady Panthers 65-62 Thursday evening at Barco-Stevens Hall.

The Lady Panthers (6-15, CIAA 2-15) trailed 61-53 with 3:14 to go before orchestrating a 10-2 run to pull within a point on a layup by Kara Scott with 1:20 left.

With 7 seconds remaining ECSU was clinging to a 63-62 lead when Kearah Jefferys blocked a potential game winning jumper by Tonaye Smith. Shaquella Johnson secured the rebound, was fouled and sent to the line where she calmly sank two free throws to secure the win.

VUU’s free throw shooting proved to be their undoing in the one point loss as they shot 17-33 for the game. Smith led all scorers with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs. Scott finished with 19 in the loss.

Freshman Crystal Smith led ECSU with a career high 18 points. Kenyatta Gill and Johnson finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
