Free books for North Carolina!

Hi Ya'll,

I want to encourage you to visit the website that follows and to vote for North Carolina to receive 50,000 new books for children in need.

You are not required to answer "What book got you hooked?" and "Why?" unless you choose to do so. You may go straight to "Where would you like to send 50,000 new books?" and vote for North Carolina.

As of this morning we were ranked #4, so we have our work cut out for us --- and it is do-able. If we receive the most votes, North Carolina will receive 50,000 new books for children in need. If you have time, please send this message to individuals on your email lists.

First Book, a Washington D.C. based non-profit, is conducting an online contest that allows participants to:

1) share the memory of the first book that made reading fun for them
2) vote for a state which will be designated to receive 50,000 new books for children in need.

Access this website to vote: NC

Lady Vikings Drop First Home Game of the Season

September 23, 2009

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings fell in four games to the University of North Carolina-Pembroke Wednesday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Braves (6-7) took the first two games pouncing on ECSU 25-13 before squeezing out game two by four points, 25-21. The Lady Vikings used better play and the momentum from game two’s tight score to edge UNCP 25-23 in game three.

Game three was the best attacking performance of the match for ECSU (and the only one with double digit kills) as the Lady Vikings tallied 15 kills versus 6 errors to take it 25-23. An ECSU comeback was not to be for ECSU as the Braves regrouped and behind a match high 19 kills by Allie Schneider closed out the final game 25-17.

Lia Scott was the only Lady Viking with double digit kills, finishing with a team high 12 in the loss.

The Lady Vikings (11-8) will face Peace College in Raleigh, NC on Friday, September 25th at 6:00 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

Cruiser's Net: Why You Should Visit Elizabeth City, NC

Below is a note that we saw from a website called Cruiser's Net, and I thought I would share it:
_________________________

The excellent report below from Captains Sonny and Nancy is NOT a surprise to this writer. Seldom will cruisers ever find a more welcoming port of call than Elizabeth City. And, these good people are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

Hello, Mr. Young,
My wife and I recently cruised up to Virginia from Florida. Our route north included taking the Virginia cut in lieu of the Dismal Swamp Canal route. On our return, however, some fellow cruisers told us it would behoove us to take the Dismal Swamp and make a stop in Elizabeth City, NC. They said the city is boater friendly and we should have an enjoyable visit.

We followed their advice and took the Dismal Swamp route, arriving in Elizabeth City on Monday night, September 14th. We met two other cruisers at the Visitors Center on the Dismal Swamp canal and arrived with them at Elizabeth City simultaneously. We checked in with the tourism center and were given a rousing welcome. They catered to our every need, including offers for rides to grocery stores. laundromats, to purchase ice and pretty much anything else we needed. The dockage was COMPLIMENTARY and they also provided Wi Fi computer service. Later in the day, a representative came by each boat and advised that they were hosting a wine and cheese reception for the visiting boaters. We decided to attend and were greeted by a member of the “Rosebuddies”. This is a group that was started many years ago for the purpose of making cruising boaters feel welcome in Elizabeth City. Part of the reception was giving a rose to each female member of a boating party. In addition, the Mayor of the city was in attendance at the reception and made it a point to greet each boat owner and their respective families personally. I don’t believe I have ever visited another town anywhere in the United States in a boat and had the mayor come out and greet us. Mayor Steven Atkinson told us about the many services and programs that are available to us cruisers as well as their many attractions, especially the Albemarle Museum. Lastly, the rosebuddy who spoke to us advised us on additional areas of interest to boaters together with local knowledge of the water which enabled some of us to shorten travel time and several miles on our way south after leaving Elizabeth City.

I have to say that as one who has been cruising for over twenty years, never have we been received so warmly as we were in this small town waterfront town in North Carolina. They are currently promoting “The Carolina Loop” for people in North Carolina, Virginia, and other areas. They have a brochure on their website that provides a detailed explanation of the trip.

I am sure you have probably been made aware of this city, however, I felt I would be remiss in my duty as a fellow cruiser if I did not tell you what a great time we had on our visit. My wife Nancy and I would highly recommend spending time there. Also, we wish to congratulate Elizabeth City Tourism on the splendid job they did making all of us cruisers feel welcome. We will visit this charming city again.

US Department of Education grant, $3 million, funds ECSU graduate programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) received $3 million from the U.S. Department of Education under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Masters Degree Program Grant. Funding will be allocated over a six-year period at $500,000 per year. Funds are intended to establish and/or strengthen master’s degree programs in the following areas: mathematics; engineering; the physical or natural sciences; computer science; information technology; nursing; allied health; or other scientific disciplines. ECSU plans to strengthen existing graduate programs in biology and mathematics by providing additional personnel; equipment and materials; and graduate student scholarships. Funds will also be used to create a new Professional Science Master’s (PSM) Program in Applied Mathematics.

Dr. Paula S. Viltz, Professor and Director of Graduate Education at ECSU and principle investigator for the grant, said the region will benefit when students graduate from these programs and return to work in area communities.

"We will increase the number of students graduating with degrees in areas where there are critical needs --- math and science. The grant will improve graduate educational opportunities for African-Americans and low-income students. After graduation, they will qualify for good jobs that contribute to the economic development and productivity of the region," Viltz said.

"Our graduate program joins other University of North Carolina system graduate programs to embrace the PSM degree which prepares students for careers in business, government and non- profit agencies. Students in this program will take a series of mathematics courses and professional skill development courses which are highly valued by employers in those sectors."
