He drew the most sustained applause of the evening when he unleashed his full power...” (Press Citizen, Iowa City).

As a concert singer, Mr. Heard has been engaged by orchestras across the western, mid-western, and southern regions of the United States, specializing in the works of Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. Mr. Heard has appeared with Carolina Baroque Orchestra, Charlotte Repertory Orchestra, Choral Society of Greensboro, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, Lake Charles Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Mississippi Symphony, Piedmont Chamber Singers, Raleigh Oratorio Society, Roanoke Symphony, Salisbury-Rowan Symphony, Virginia Beach Symphony and Winston-Salem Piedmont Symphony.

Mr. Heard made his European debut in December 1994, performing concerts in Merzig, Emden, and Berlin. In the summer of 1996 he made his debut with Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional in Costa Rica performing the role of Remus in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha.

In April 2000, he gave the world premiere performance of William Banfield’s opera Luyala with Triangle Opera Company. Mr. Heard released his first CD in October 1998 featuring “Art Songs by African-American Composers.” Performances during the 2007-08 season included Messiah with Rhode Island Philharmonic, Houston Choral Society in a commissioned work by composer Adolphus Hailstork, and performances with Spiritual Voices in Dallas, Texas. This season, Mr. Heard appears with Piedmont Chamber Singers, Greensboro Oratorio Society, and will tour Germany in December with Spiritual Voices. VIKINGS FUMBLE AWAY VICTORY TO BOWIE STATE 37-33

Bulldogs’ Late Surge Overcomes Ten Point Deficit in Final Eight Minutes to Stun ECSU at Home

    October 10, 2009

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Bowie State University’s Terence Peete returned a 33-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown with 4:12 remaining to propel the Bulldogs to a 37-33 win at Roebuck Stadium.

That score gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the afternoon and with the win they remain atop the CIAA East at 5-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.

The Vikings had a chance to go in for the winning score but Peete foiled their hopes as he picked off a Creven Powell pass in the end zone with 1:52 remaining.

BSU entered the contest boasting the best offense in the CIAA as well as the league’s top rusher in Rodney Webb. ECSU held the Bulldogs to 262 yards of total offense and surrendered only 57 net yards on the ground to Webb. Unfortunately ECSU lost 3 of 5 fumbles all of which came in the second half during the Bulldogs’ rally. The Vikings were also penalized 12 times for 100 yards. Defensively the Vikings were paced by Tolbert Matthews who finished with a game high 9 tackles. On the afternoon ECSU dropped Bulldogs quarterbacks Emmanuel Yeager and Andre Johnson a combined 5 times.

The Vikings offense did recapture their rhythm on Saturday, rolling up 461 yards while Powell passed for career high 314 yards and two touchdowns.

ECSU went up 20-0 early in the opening period before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard via an 84-yard kickoff return for a score by James Proctor with 4 seconds remaining in the 1st. Powell added a rushing score (failed extra point) for the 26-7 halftime score.

Ranier Rackley padded the score with a 2-yard rushing touchdown putting the Vikings ahead, 33-17 with 10:15 remaining. Then just as the Vikings outscored BSU 20-7 in the first quarter, the Bulldogs turned the tables scoring 20 un-answered to take the game.

The Vikings (4-3, CIAA 2-2) will host their final home game against Lincoln University for Homecoming 2009 at Roebuck Stadium next Saturday, October 17th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

    Hey Veterans Supporters

Come on out this Saturday to Applebee’s in Elizabeth City for our Pancake & Sausage Breakfast Fundraiser!

Proceeds go to the Veterans Family Resource Center of the Albemarle to help fund our various programs and services for veterans and their families, which in turn, helps everyone in our community.

Many people are unaware of the many programs available to veterans, disabled veterans, their families and their widows. These include disability pension, education and job training, home loan programs, entrepreneurship opportunities, medical care, transition assistance, long-term care, burial benefits, and many more.

Due to the economy and lack of funding, we’ve had to close our center on Ehringhaus, but we’re still going strong and hope to open a new center in just a few months. As a non-profit charitable organization, our all-volunteer staff has made a difference to over 480 veterans and their families since we started in June 2008. We’ve learned a lot about our veterans and our community during the past year, and we have big plans for the future. We are planning our new center to include a classroom/conference room, computer lab and inter-agency projects, including a new focus on Veterans Education and Job Assistance (VEJA Program) to better serve our vets and our community.

We know everyone is busy these days, but please plan on starting your day out this Saturday by joining us at Applebee’s for a delicious Pancake and Sausage Breakfast from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Grab a chance to win a beautiful American Flag afghan, hand-crocheted by the wife of one of our own disabled veteran client, which will be awarded this Veterans Day! Tickets for a 50-50 Raffle will also be available with the winning ticket pulled during the Breakfast this Saturday. Can’t stay for breakfast? Take-out platters are also available for the same price!

Tickets are only $5.00 each and can be purchased at the door, by calling us at 252-337-9765, or at the following locations:
    • Long & Foster Real Estate, 1100 W. Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City

    • Pride in NC, 905 Halstead Blvd. Suite 20, in Winchester Station, Elizabeth City

Can’t make it this Saturday? You can always show your support! As a 501(c)3 public charity, your donation is tax-free and can be dropped off at any of the above ticket locations, or mailed to:
